Deer Ticks
Deer ticks, also known as black-legged ticks, are found on Long Island and come with no white markings. They are brown to black in color and are very, very small. These ticks in some parts of the USA are known as the Bear Ticks and are often mistaken for brown dog ticks. The deer tick has a flat, broad, oval shaped body and is an orange-brown color. They are also commonly called blacklegged ticks because of their darker colored legs. Deer ticks are a small species of ticks
Ticks are arachnids, typically 3 to 5 mm long. Ticks are external parasites, living by feeding on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians.
Dog Ticks
American dog ticks will vary slightly in appearance depending on whether they have just fed or not. Before feeding, they are brownish-tan in color and have white or yellow markings. After feeding, they are more of a grayish-blue or olive green color.
Lone Star Ticks
As their name suggests, this type of tick is most common in Texas and other southeast states. Rarely are they found on Long Island or elsewhere in New York.
Lone Star ticks can’t fly or jump. They climb up grass or other vegetation to hitchhike/ grab onto a passing host.
